Reflection

On reflection, being diagnosed with prostate cancer was devastating and difficult to accept. My mind shut down, and I certainly had no plans to talk about it. And writing a book never entered my mind. It wasn’t until much later, with my spouse’s support, that talking about it, although difficult, was helpful and therapeutic. At first, I started a simple journal and documented my doctor’s appointments, test results, and general thoughts and feelings. It was an emotional release to write, and it helped me process and accept my diagnosis. Since I wrote intimate details of my thoughts and feelings, I kept my journey private and hidden.

Over time, many friends, family members and coworkers asked how I was coping. Therefore, I summoned the courage to share my journal, which included intimate details as a private blog. At first, I wasn’t sure if I was doing the right thing, as some of my close friends cut contact. Although, I quickly regained confidence as several others encouraged me to keep writing and sharing. Therefore, I decided to write a book that shared my entire experience from diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing recovery. And it was critical not to leave out any intimate details. Otherwise, I thought there would be no point in writing at all.

Dedication

After two years of constant writing, research and working through the nights, I’m proud of the results. And knowing others may benefit is extremely heartwarming. I dedicate my book to all who have lived and are living with prostate cancer, their families and loved ones, and the medical professionals involved. My thoughts are with you.
