Gogs gets a PSA Blood Test

My PSA was on the rise

My doctor explained that PSA stands for prostate-specific antigen, a protein produced by the prostate. It’s a simple blood test that measures the amount of PSA in the bloodstream. Although, it’s essential to know that the PSA test alone cannot detect prostate cancer. An elevated PSA doesn’t necessarily mean you have prostate cancer, and a low PSA doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t.

In my case, my PSA was measured 14 times over five years with a disturbing upward trend. I’m grateful my doctor recommended PSA testing even though I had no symptoms and a clear digital rectal examination or DRE. Without testing, I wouldn’t have known my PSA was rising. It turns out that the cancer tumour was massive and in the final stage before escaping the prostate. And since I had no symptoms, regular PSA testing saved me from a terminal diagnosis.

Even though the PSA test cannot detect prostate cancer, I consider it perfect for measuring and monitoring PSA levels in the bloodstream. The readings are incredibly accurate and brilliant for watching trends and fast-rising results.

In my opinion, the whole point of screening for prostate cancer is to ensure it’s not already in an advanced stage. If you wait for symptoms, it’s most likely already spread. I know a lot of guys that take better care of their car than their health. And remember that damage may have already occurred by the time the engine oil light flashes.

In other words, please don’t wait for symptoms. And if you catch it early, that doesn’t necessarily mean you need treatment. Early detection provides the most options, including active surveillance. Please consider discussing the pros and cons of the PSA blood test with your doctor.
